1st June 2006: Going the extra mile for LastMile Communications Ltd
The team at Staplethorne Ltd are pleased to have made a contribution in helping LastMile, one of the most exciting technology opportunities in recent years, to achieve lift-off.
LastMile is an innovative provider of secure, edge-of-network wireless content delivery solutions. The company’s unique node-based hardware system helps create wireless networks within fixed geographical locations, resulting in a low-cost, high performance wireless content delivery for service providers, municipalities and users across many industries, including healthcare, universities, corporate enterprises, public security and transportation.
Staplethorne’s contribution:
Staplethorne Ltd generally and Dr Keith Barfoot in particular, as lead consultant, have provided high level support services to LastMile for four years. In particular, Keith has helped to take the small start-up Engineering Facility from circa £20K spend per month in December 2004 to circa £400K spend per month in the space of 9 months. This has included setting up the facilities, recruiting staff and subcontractors, and helping in negotiating and managing major development subcontracts with, amongst others, QinetiQ and IBM, and generally project managing this period of rapid growth in a balanced way.
Staplethorne and its team of experienced physicists, electronics design engineers, and software designers have brought a wealth of product development and commercial project management resources to LastMile. This has enabled LastMile to rapidly bootstrap their ambitious growth plans. Staplethorne’s support team, including a chartered accountant, has also helped careful cost control of the engineering function during these hectic times.
Working closely with Tim Crocker, Chief Technology Officer / Founder Director of LastMile, they have helped take LastMile to the stage where it now has the technical team resources to become self-managing. So Keith can now step down his level of effort and get back to working on the other exciting client projects within Staplethorne’s portfolio. As Tim Crocker says “It has been an absolutely hectic year or so, but we came through it and are now seeing light at the end of the tunnel of this amazing project opportunity.”
